In 1974 werd een ‘Provinciale Grootloge Nederland’ geconstitueerd, onder gezag van deze Orde in Schotland. In ons land worden ervaren Meester-vrijmetselaars tot haar werkwijze uitgenodigd.
Er zijn nu rond de 90 vrijmetselaars lid van de Nederlandse Provinciale Grootloge van deze Orde.
Zij komen twee keer per jaar, de tweede vrijdag in maart en in oktober, bijeen in Huize het Oosten in Bilthoven. De bijeenkomst wordt gevolgd door een 'Broedermaal' samen met de partners.
Het is een van de meest selecte graden, die in Schotland verleend wordt aan sommige verdienstelijke vrijmetselaren. In de 18e eeuw bestond de R.O.S. uit twee graden “Heredom of Kilwinning” en “Rosy Cross”.
Nu zijn ze samengevoegd. De graad behelst overigens een dubbele fase:
de overschrijding van de brug- en de toelating van de kamer van Wijsheid.
In elk kapittel wordt rechts van de Tirshatha (de voorzitter) een zetel onbezet gelaten en bekleed met Koninklijke attributen: een hermelijnen mantel en een kroon. Want de koning van Schotland wordt nog steeds als Grootmeester van de Orde beschouwd.
De Graad van Heredom of Kilwinning is opvallend christelijk.
Het hele rituaal is in archaïsch Engels opgesteld en gedeeltelijk op rijm.
Nederland is het enige land ter wereld dat de ritualen van de Royal Order of Scotland in de moedertaal mag bezigen. Overal elders is de Engelse taal voorgeschreven.
De Royal Order of Scotland, met zetel te Edinburgh, heeft zich ook buiten Schotland ontwikkeld. Er bestaan provinciale grootloges van de Royal Order over de gehele wereld verspreid.
Toetreding geschiedt op uitnodiging.
Daarnaast vindt er nog een ballotage plaats waarbij gekeken wordt naar voldoende enthousiaste deelname van de kandidaat in andere obediënties.

The Royal Order of Scotland is an appendant order within the structures of Freemasonry.
The Grand Lodge of the Royal Order of Scotland is headquartered in Edinburgh, with a total of 88 subordinate Provincial Grand Lodges.
Since the King of the Scots is the Grand Master of the Royal Order, the Chairman of the Order has the title of Deputy Grand Master and Governor and Brother Ewan Rutherford was appointed to that role 4th July 2020.
It is one of the most select degrees granted in Scotland to some deserving Master Masons.
The Royal Order of Scotland's Grand Lodge and the Provincial Grand Lodges confer two degrees:
- Heredom of Kilwinning
- Knight of the Rosy Cross
The Degree Heredom of Kilwinning is divided into two steps, the one being usually described as the “passing of the Bridge” and the other the “Admission to Cabinet of Wisdom”.
The Degree of Heredom or Kilwinning is remarkably Christian. The whole rite is arranged in archaic English and partly in rhyme.
Every meeting of the Royal Order of Scotland could, in theory, take a dramatic turn. Beside the Chairman a seat is left empty, except for a robe, crown, and sceptre, in case the hereditary Grand Master, the King of the Scots, should decide to take up his place.
The 'Provincial Grand Lodge Netherlands' was founded in 1974 under the authority of this Order in Scotland.
There are now around 80 Master Masons members of the Dutch Provincial Grand Lodge of this Order.
Meets at Huize "Het Oosten", Rubenslaan 1, 3723 BM Bilthoven, Holland, every second Friday in March and October. The meeting will be followed by a Banquet together with the partners.
The Netherlands is the only country in the world that is allowed to practice the rites of the Royal Order of Scotland in its native language. The English language is prescribed everywhere else.
Membership is an honour extended to Master Masons by invitation. In addition, there is a ballot in which the candidate is sufficiently enthusiastic to participate in other obedients.
